By project

What each project costs depends on

These are the things we look at when we write a quote. Knowing them helps you plan, and compare quotes fairly.

Building a new deck

Size and height drive the price most. A ground-level deck needs far less framing than a deck 10 feet up a slope, which needs taller posts, deeper footings, bracing and stairs. Then come the decking (pressure-treated, cedar, composite or PVC), the railing style, and extras like built-in benches, lighting and a roof.

Custom decks

Composite (Trex-style) vs wood

Composite boards cost more up front than pressure-treated wood, often noticeably more. But they don’t need yearly cleaning and staining every few years, so the gap shrinks over the life of the deck. If you plan to stay in the house, composite often comes out close to even.

Composite decking

Replacing or repairing a deck

If the framing and footings are sound, new boards and railings cost much less than a full rebuild. If joists, posts or the ledger board on the house are rotting, rebuilding is usually the better value and the safer choice. We check the structure first and tell you honestly.

Deck repair & replacement

Covered decks, screened porches & sunrooms

A roof is the big step up: it needs posts and footings strong enough to carry it, and it has to tie into the house. Screening adds a smaller cost on top. A sunroom with windows, insulation, heat and electrical is the most involved, closer to a room addition.

Screened porches

Garages & carports

A detached garage is priced by size (one, two or three cars), the slab and site prep, the doors, and the finish: siding and roofing to match the house, insulation, windows, power and lofts. A carport costs far less because it has no walls, slab work is optional, and it goes up quickly.

Deck staining & sealing

Staining is priced mostly by deck size and condition. A deck that only needs cleaning and a fresh coat costs much less than one that needs boards replaced, sanding and stripping first. Railings and stairs take longer than open floor.

What affects the price

8 things that set the cost

1

Size

Square footage of the deck, porch or garage.

2

Height & slope

Steep Asheville lots need taller posts, more bracing and longer stairs.

3

Materials

Pressure-treated, cedar, composite, PVC or hardwood; wood, cable or metal railing.

4

Roof or screens

Covers, screen rooms and sunrooms add structure and work.

5

Site & access

Clearing, grading, tight backyards and long driveways all take time.

6

Tear-out

Removing and hauling away an old deck or structure first.

7

Permits

Permit and inspection fees from the county or town.

8

Extras

Stairs, lighting, built-in benches, power, lofts and doors.

Save money

Ways to lower the cost

A few choices early on can make a real difference.

  • Repair a deck while the framing is still sound, before it needs a full rebuild
  • Keep the deck at the existing door height so nothing inside the house changes
  • Use composite boards on top and pressure-treated framing underneath
  • Plan for a roof or screens now, even if you add them later
  • Consider a carport if you don't need a fully enclosed garage
  • Bundle projects, like a deck and a screen room, into one build

Watch out for the lowest bid

A very low quote can mean no permit, no insurance or corners cut on footings and framing you will never see. Ask for a written quote that lists the materials, and proof of insurance. We're fully licensed and insured, and we pull the permits.

FAQ

Cost questions

Anything else? Call us at 828-338-9182.

How much does it cost to build a deck in Asheville?

It depends mainly on the size, how high it sits off the ground, the decking and railing you choose, and extras like stairs or a roof. The fastest way to an exact number is a free quote. Send photos with the form and we can often give you a ballpark quickly.

Is a Trex or composite deck worth the extra cost?

If you plan to stay in the house and don’t want to stain every few years, usually yes. Composite costs more up front, but the upkeep you skip narrows the gap over time.

How much does a screened-in porch cost?

Screening an existing covered porch costs much less than building a new screened porch from scratch, because the roof and structure are already there. We price both ways if it is an option.

How much does a 2-car garage cost to build?

It depends on size, slab and site prep, doors, and finishes like siding, insulation and power. A carport is the lower-cost option when you only need cover. We give free custom quotes for both.

Do I need a permit to build a deck in NC?

Most decks attached to a house, and most decks that are raised off the ground, need a building permit in North Carolina. Rules vary by county and town, so we check for your address and pull the permit for you.

How long does a deck last?

A well-built, well-maintained wood deck can last for decades. Composite boards resist rot and fading even longer. Regular cleaning, sealing and quick repairs are what make the difference for wood.

Do you offer financing?

Yes, we offer flexible financing options. Ask us for details when you get your quote.

Do you charge for quotes?

No. Quotes are free and come with no obligation.
